So we took Sarge for training, trainer rec giving him easy cheese in his kong, well his BMs started becoming loose so we cut back on it. Friday nite he had explosive diarrhea all over his crate. So we cleaned up his crate, bathed him and then took him outside. Well he came back in the house and sat down, there was blood where he sat so we took him to the animal hospital. They diagnosed him with colitis, gave him metrodonizole for a week and bland diet of boiled chicken and rice. Soooo now he's taking him med and eating bland food but he's not drinking a lot of fluids. Main concern of course dehydration. We are taking him to our vet tomorrow.

Is colitis common in the alapahas? anyone experience something similiar? help please!!!! thanks

Dairy is not the best thing for dogs in any case, especially highly processed varieties like slices and squeezy, and as the Alapaha has been bread though it lines on RMB it would not be something that thier digestion system would have encountered, and certainly not something an Alapaha breeder would suggest.

So far he seems to be doing better. We have stopped all treats. Only feeding kibble and he's ok. Obviously we didnt know any better so we listened to the trainer when she said Easy Cheese be ok. Now to get him back on track with training and we should be set. Thanks

hi sarge,i agree cheese and cows milk is a big no no only dairy products i would consider feeding my dog is raw egg for protein and probiotic sugar free yoghurt helps  with gut flora.the rice and chicken should sort him out and try feeding him brown or pearl rice instead of white.hope this helps.

Nice bit of raw meaty bones should do the trick, though you'd probably want to wait untill hes all cleared up first.
